How do I get started?
BadBlue is an easy way to let your PC share files with others.
First thing you'll need to do is to determine what outside users
can search for. Click on the Manage tab, then click Setup
search tab. This will let you select files or even entire
folders that can users can search from the Search tab.
Later on, if you wish, you can even password protect
shared areas and enforce other security
rules to protect your data from unauthorized access. |
|
Select files or folders to share
Select a file to share. Even if you want to share an entire
folder, select a single file, click OK on the file box and then
check the Share all files in this folder checkbox. Then
press the Share! button. Do this as many times as you need
for the different files or folders you need to share.
When you're done setting up files and folders for searching, just
click on the Search tab in the upper lefthand corner.
For more information on search options (including full-text searching),
visit the Search setup
FAQ page. |
|
That's it! Ready to search!
From the Search tab, enter your search terms. You
can use file extensions (e.g., xls, mdb, doc)
if you wish. Matching search results will appear on the Search
Results page (right).
When you find a useful result, right-click on the file name and
select Save Target As... to download it. Or, for certain
file formats like Access,
Word and
Excel, click
on the Live View! link to display the live data
in your browser window (see inset). |
|
Setting up the Folders tab
Now that users can search for shared files, you can also
set up your Folders tab (where users can view the folder
contents by exploring, not searching). To set up a folder, click
on the Manage tab, then click Setup folders tab.
Type in the name you would like the folder to be called, then
select any file in the folder, and press the Add virtual directory
button. That's it! The folder will be instantly available under
the Folders tab for your users to explore (pictured at
right).
Just like search files, you can easily password protect
your folders. |
|
Using the Photo Album view
In folder view, you can simply click on the camera icon
(see the screen shot, above, and look for the camera near the
middle) to view any images in the folder in Photo Album format.
Each of the thumbnail images can be clicked to retrieve a full-sized
version of the image.
Click on the folder details icon (near the middle of the screen)
to return to the folder's detailed file listing. |
|
Getting back to the main menu
If you accidentally close your browser window, it's easy
to redisplay BadBlue's main page. Simply right-click on the BadBlue
icon in the system tray and then select the Main menu option.

Let friends or colleagues surf to your PC
Now that you've set up BadBlue to share or publish files,
you can set up your own domain name
(like jsmith.dyndns.org) for your PC. This makes it easy
to have your colleagues or friends surf to your PC and search
for, display and/or download the files to which you've given them
access.
The Troubleshooting
guide provides a review of the steps necessary to let external
users connect with your PC.
While remote users can see your main menu, they are only able
to search for the files you've specified. Your administrative
menu options can only be controlled by you, from your PC.
If you want to password protect your files or otherwise secure
access to your PC, please read the BadBlue Security FAQ.
Once you have everything configured, simply use the Manage
>> Invite friends option to invite friends or colleagues
to visit your server. |
