If you're not familiar with some
of the features offered by using StartSurfing, you're
on the right page! We'll not only explain these
features to you, we'll give you some examples of
them as well so you can really understand the benefits
of using StartSurfing to protect you while you surf
the web.
Eliminates Pop-Up Windows
When you visited this page, you were greeted with
one of these annoying windows. You didn't ask
to see it. We didn't ask you if you wanted to
see it. Any other website out there can force
these on you if you don't have StartSurfing on
your computer protecting you while you surf the
web.
Eliminates Browser Resizing
When you loaded this page, we resized your browser
to its maximum height and width without asking.
In the event that you already had your browser
maximized and didn't notice this, manually resize
your browser to half of its height and width and
then reload the page.
ReEnable Your Right-Click Function
Using your mouse, try to right-click on this page.
If you don't have StartSurfing - you can't.
Disables Auto-Midi Files
Some websites think that you want to listen to
music when you visit their website and they may
or may not even realize how long it takes to load
the page. They don't ask you if you do and a lot
of those that do play music don't even give you
the option of turning it off. StartSurfing lets
you decide if you want to listen to sounds.
Removes Background Images
If you've spent much time surfing, you've seen
them. Most are ok, but you'll eventually run across
one that - well - is so ugly it hurts your eyes
just to see it. You've probably even visited websites
and had to wait for a page to finish loading only
to find out it was only the background image that
was holding you up. StartSurfing removes background
and table images.
Allows For Frame Resizing
A frame is nothing more than 2 pages merged together
to form one page. The trouble frames sometime
produce is that if the webmaster doesn't code
them correctly, you can't see everything the webmaster
intended for you to see. StartSurfing allows you
to modify (drag) frames in and out to make them
resizable.
Disable Confirm/Alert Boxes
Alert/Confirm boxes are a useful tool when used
as intended but they can also do some very deceptive
things as well. Using an alert/confirm box, I
can change your browsers startpage, add my website
to your list of favorites and read personal information
about you such as your email address, browser
version and operating system. Put your mouse over
this
link to view an alert/confirm box.
Disables Status Bar Messages
Surfers are accustomed to looking in the status
bar area when they cursor over a link so that
they can see where the link will take them. Status
bar scrollers are used to stop your ability to
do that and perhaps because the website you're
on doesn't want you to know where a link really
leads to. If you look down at the bottom left
hand corner of your browser now, you'll see a
really annoying status bar message. When you mouse-over
this link, it hides where the link leads to. Mouse-Over
Here. Can you tell where the link goes to?
Disables OnMouseover Events
An onMouseover event is when your cursor touches
something on a web page that is coded in such
a way that something happens when the event occurs.
This could be something as covering up the actual
url of where a link goes to something more devious
such as automatically sending you to another website.
To see an example of this Mouse
Over this link and we'll open up a pop-up
without your actually clicking the link.
SmartSearch Results
StartSurfing provides highly targeted search results
when performing a search on many of your favorite
search engines. If StartSurfing isn't compatabile
with your favorite search engine - send us an
email and we'll add it!
Friendly 404 Error Messages
One of the newest features we've added to StartSurfing
is the ability to provide you with more useful
information when a website you've visited doesn't
load. Internet Explorer and Netscape both use
generic error messages. We think you'll appreciate
knowing if you've simply mistyped the domain name
or if the domain simply does not exist. We also
give you the ability to choose your next course
of action - whether it be correcting a spelling
or performing another search!
