Shapes that tessellate

Tessellations are regular patterns of shapes fitting snugly together. Download the empty pictures onto your own computer by right-clicking on the picture, clicking on 'Save Picture As', and saving it into a folder. Then you can open it in 'Paint' and colour it in as you want, by using the 'Fill' tool (the paint-pot).

Triangles - these make pretty tessellations. Two triangles make a diamond. Six triangles make a hexagon.

Squares - rather obvious! By colouring them, you can build up more complicated patterns.

Hexagons
blank hexagons You can make hexagons (6 sides) with the triangle grid, which also has the advantage that you can mix hexagons and triangles. However, if you want a hexagon grid, here it is.

Triangles, squares and hexagons are the only regular shapes which tessellate by themselves.

Bees make natural tessellations of hexagons in their homeycombs.

See the triangle grid for some ideas for hexagon patterns.

Triangles and Squares - You can mix squares and triangles in the same pattern. This is the boring way. You can make it more interesting with colouring.

The other grid looks strange, as we don't recognise squares as easily when they are tilted.

Various shapes - Here are several grids with more than one shape. I haven't coloured these, as the basic tessellations are attractive.

Octagons (8 sides) and squares

Dodecagons (12 sides) and triangles.

Pentagons - Regular pentagons won't make a tessellation, but rather squashed ones will.

Waffle - You don't have to restrict yourself to regular shapes. Here is a waffle pattern, and a suggested colour scheme.
